Around the World Now
Artists and sounds moving locally before everybody else catches up. Five discoveries. Five different scenes. One question: what haven't you heard yet?
ZayLevelTen
Rapper and producer ZayLevelTen — also producing as Tenski — pushes Nigerian street language, distorted synths, heavy trap percussion and internet-era underground energy into a sound that doesn't sit neatly inside conventional Afrobeats.
DIBOBA
DIBOBA gives The World Eclectic a doorway into Angola's Afro-house and electronic club ecosystem — a scene with its own DJs, producers, rhythms and local momentum that rarely receives comparable American music coverage.
AQT
Brooklyn-born and Houston-based, AQT works from a Nigerian-American identity rather than simply copying a Lagos formula. His Afro-fusion brings Nigerian rhythmic language into a wider American and cross-cultural frame.
Babalwa M
Babalwa M's soulful vocal approach sits inside the smoother, more intimate side of amapiano. Her work offers a useful counterpoint to the festival-sized version of the genre many international listeners encounter first.
ZTVZ
Brothers Diego and Carlos Andrés Estévez build what they call Z-pop: a retro-futuristic Latin-pop language mixing live musicianship, electronic color, indie instincts and a visual universe that deliberately sits outside the expected Puerto Rican export.

The Swing That Changed the Grid
J Dilla helped redefine how programmed drums could feel. His timing, sampling, restraint, and sense of groove influenced generations of producers across underground hip-hop, neo-soul, beat culture, and lo-fi production.
Rhythm
Loose timing and humanized drum placement without losing forward motion.
Sampling
Unexpected chops, source choices, and re-contextualized fragments.
Legacy
A production vocabulary that still echoes through modern beat culture.
