GUMM STICK: What Does “One-Stop” Mean in Sync?

Small bite. Real value.

A record is one-stop when a single party can grant every right needed to use it. One phone call, one signature, done.

Why that phrase exists

Every song carries two separate copyrights. The composition is the song itself — melody and lyrics — and it belongs to the writers and their publishers. The master is the specific recording, and it belongs to whoever paid for or owns that recording. To put music in a film, a show, a game or an ad, a supervisor needs permission from both sides.

If your record has four writers across three publishers plus a label that controls the master, that is potentially five separate approvals. Every one of them can say no, ask for more money, or simply not answer their email. If one person controls all of it, the supervisor gets a yes or a no in a day.

Why it decides placements

Sync runs on deadlines that are almost always shorter than they should be. An editor has a scene locked, a delivery date, and a shortlist of records that fit. When two records work equally well and one clears in twenty-four hours while the other needs four signatures from people in three time zones, the choice makes itself.

Independent artists are frequently one-stop without realising it. If you wrote it alone and paid for the session, you may already control both sides — which is a genuine competitive advantage over a major-label record, and worth saying plainly when you pitch.

Getting closer to one-stop

  • Settle splits at the session and keep the signed sheet
  • Where co-writers are involved, get written authority to license on everyone’s behalf — this is the piece most people skip
  • Know exactly who owns the master, and be able to prove it
  • Keep contributor contact details current, including producers and featured artists
  • Say “one-stop” in your pitch when it is true, and be ready to show the paperwork

Do not claim one-stop if you are not certain. A clearance that collapses halfway through is worse for your reputation than never being shortlisted, and licensing authority across co-writers is the point where a music attorney genuinely earns their fee.

G.U.M.M. STICKS are short, practical pieces from Gemwork Urban Music Magazine. One useful term, tactic or tool at a time.
